Power BI Modeling & DAX fundamentals

Valuable Insights with Power BI Models
A Power BI data model, or analytical model, is the core of a Power BI solution. Each Power BI report is based on a data model that combines data and provides aggregations and all sorts of calculated results. The concepts of Power BI data models may seem easy and familiar, but make no mistake: building a well-performing data model requires a different way of thinking from working with relational databases or Excel. In this course, you'll learn about building Power BI data models and how to use the DAX language.
The concepts and techniques of Power BI data models are identically available in other tools like Power Pivot in Excel, SQL Server Analysis Services Tabular, and Azure Analysis Services. So, the knowledge acquired through this course can be applied in many ways.

Learning Goals
• Being able to build efficient analytical models with different types of tables and relationships
• Being able to add calculations to models with DAX
• Knowing best practices to develop models that are fast and easy to maintain

Audience
Everyone who wants to acquire a solid basis for building analytical models in Power BI or similar tools. The target audience includes BI consultants, members of BI teams, business analysts, business controllers, senior Excel users, and database developers who want to switch to modern BI.

Topics
• Basics of Power BI data modeling: tables, relationships, data types, metadata
• Building analytical models
• Introduction to DAX: calculated columns and measures
• Basic DAX functions
• DAX context
• Filters in DAX
• Time Intelligence functions, like year-to-date and rolling total

Demystifying DAX - Take your DAX to the next level

Course Description:
DAX is the data modelling language of Power BI and Power Pivot for Excel. It is reasonably easy to get started with DAX, however sooner or later most people hit a wall where they get stuck and can't move forward. Have you ever typed a DAX formula, pressed enter and then crossed your fingers hoping you will get the right answer? If this sounds like you, then chances are there are some deeper concepts that you don't fully understand, and these gaps are stopping you from moving forward.
In this full day pre-con session, Matt Allington (author of the book Supercharge Power BI) will clearly explain how the DAX language really works under the hood. At the end of the session you will fully understand filter propagation, evaluation contexts and some of the harder to understand concepts and functions. The session will use real world examples to explain the concepts. This is not a beginner’s course – you should already know the basics of DAX and have been using the language for at least 6 months before attending.

Course Objectives:
Fill gaps in understanding of how the DAX Language works in order to underpin future learning and understanding.

Course Audience: Users of Power BI and Power Pivot for Excel who already have a base understanding and experience using DAX

Course Level: Intermediate

Course Pre-Requisites: Bring your own laptop with Power BI Desktop and DAX Studio installed.

From BI to AI, power your analyses
Since Business Intelligence has appeared in organisations, users have many questions about data :
"I doubt the quality of my data, how can I check it?"
"My indicator is decreasing, I'd like to understand why!"
"I have too many detailed elements, how can I synthesize?"
"I can see what happened, but I would like to look to the future..."

Statistical analysis is a good method to answer but requires advanced knowledge (and often R or Python code...).

Some powerful features of Power BI now allow users to reach a real explicative and predictive analysis. Let's discover and evaluate them... with a little bit of method!

Modeling data for rookies
Before playing with Power BI to build the coolest report ever created, there is always the first mandatory step of importing data into the model. Of course in Live connection or Direct Query, very few transformations are required but in import data mode, everyone should take the necessary time to create a clean model.
Actually 70% of the work, in building a report, is on the creation of a good model. Otherwise, the creation of measures and interaction between different tables will be painful.

In this session I will show to everyone the few rules to follow when building a model and the many useful features in Power Query to quickly clean your data.

What is a dimension table? What is a fact table? How to build them? How to create an index? How to make Power BI recognize automatically your relationship?

You will be an expert in no time!

Building a Modern Datawarehouse and Power BI Solution in Microsoft Cloud
Data warehouse and BI market is evolving rapidly with the appearance of new cloud born technologies. We might assume, that moving an existing Microsoft based DWH to the cloud is an easy step, but when we dig a little bit deeper, we will see, there are many-many new technological choices and aspects on how to modernize an existing dwh/bi system in the cloud. Not to mention if we start everything from scratch in a new project designed specifically to the cloud to utilize cloud flexibility and innovation as much as possible.
Which ETL tool should I use? Data factory v2 with SSIS and BIML, or Azure Databricks powered Dataflows? Or Power BI Dataflow? Which is the right decision to run OLAP workloads? Azure AS? Or simply Power BI? When do I need Azure SQL DWH?
In the last couple years I helped many customers to modernize their DWH landscape partially or fully in the cloud and during my presentation I will share my findings and recipes for the most common situation I met. You will have fun:)

How to make sure that the end-user of your Power BI report understands the information well? There is way more involved in presenting your data then only a chart. Think about interaction, presenting the right information at the right time and much more!
By using Story telling it is possible to tell the story behind the data. Where does the information need to come from and how did we get to an answer? The complete story line covered in your reports and dashboards to make sure the data is interpreted in the right way by the users.
During this session I will tell more about the principles of story telling. Besides that this session will be covered with lots of Power BI demos. During these demos I will give examples of functionality within Power BI which can be used to create your own story in Power BI. I will not only show the end result, but also how to create a report or dashboard like that to tell your own story!

Best Practices for Power Query
Power Query is probably the easiest way to extract, transform and load data. With just some clicks, your data is cleansed and transformed. Things get complicated when you need more queries for your model. If you don't create structure, queries tend to get messy.

This session is all about structuring your queries. Using groups, local and global parameters, documentation in M and creating small, but beautiful M-code. Applying common sense will bring you to create better queries. We will also discuss how to apply these best practices to Dataflows.

The Secret to Mastering DAX
To get the most out of DAX calculations in Power BI, a good understanding of context is indispensable. In this session you’ll learn about the characteristics of different kinds of context in Power BI models: row context, query context, and filter context. We’ll also discuss the behavior of DAX functions within different contexts.

In complex DAX calculations, multiple contexts can be active at the same time. To really understand what is going on, it is important to be able to identify these. Therefore we’ll discuss DAX functions that activate and transform context. In short, after this session context in Power BI will have no secrets for you anymore!

Troubleshooting Power BI Report Performance
So you've built a Power BI report with all the shinies? Good!
After some usage, users have reacted that it's a bit sluggish in usage, and they're not keen on using it anymore.

Starting off with the new Performance Analyzer Pane, we'll demonstrate how you can pinpoint bottlenecks in your report, and take actions on these insights.

With the myriad of root causes that are out there, an elimination approach might suit us very well.
Some of the main causes will be explained, and we'll get you going on how you can fix it for yourselves.

Be it DAX-measures, modelling issues, or an overload of visuals.
Every report can be tuned to handle like a dream, and you can do it too!
